Peer-to-peer training is the process of one person teaching another to do something outside of the workplace or formal training institution. A common and simple example would be craft classes. But we are seeing more and more professional services (and not just Forex). You are essentially consulting by sharing your skills with someone (both on a one-on-one basis and in groups).

The opportunity
People contact us all the time, asking where they can get training to start a practical business. Most of the stuff is skills they can start themselves. Some people can figure things out themselves and are able to teach themselves via research, YouTube, or an online course, while others just need a visual helping hand.

Peer-to-peer training could be a model for South Africa’s skills deficit and high unemployment, essentially giving people a skill they can start a business with. Peer-to-peer training is usually a practical, “one-dimensional” skill. A car mechanic, for example, is not a good candidate. Whereas something like window tinting is something that can be simply taught, cheaply started, and pretty straightforward to operate.

It needs to be something simple rather than complicated. window tinting, for example, vs. fixing a car
It has to be focussed rather than general; woodworking is too general. Coffin-making is niche.

Business Model

This is an in-person, mainly local business.
It must be competitively priced. Remember, you are not an accredited institution; you are just teaching people a skill. And it's a skill that most likely won’t be enough to get a job, but for people to start their own business. Preferably, be positioned close to a densely populated, low-income area. On the low end, around 9 million people are currently receiving a R370 per month “unemployment grant,” so if you can focus on tailoring to that market, it could be potentially lucrative.

You can operate a one-person business or a studio model with different people teaching different skills (they can rent rooms from you or you can profit share with them) in the following formats:

  • Classes
  • Workshops
  • Hands-On Training
