A fire blanket is a safety device designed to extinguish small fires by smothering them. It is typically made of fire-resistant materials such as fiberglass or wool treated with fire-retardant chemicals. Fire blankets are stored in a folded or rolled form, often in a quick-release pouch or container, for easy access in case of an emergency.

When deployed, a fire blanket is unfolded and placed over the fire, effectively cutting off the fire's oxygen supply and smothering it. This action helps to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further.

Fire blankets are an important component of fire safety equipment and should be readily available in areas where fire hazards are present. They are relatively simple to use and can be an effective means of extinguishing small fires before they escalate into larger emergencies.

Market Need
Any business that uses a stove or open flame needs a fire blanket. While a fire extinguisher is an essential part of any safety strategy it can create a mess that can take hours to clean up (if used for small fire). A fire blanket can extinguish and prevent fires from spreading without much cleanup and should be used as a first line of defence instead of a costly and messy fire extinguisher. A fire blanket is also a fast and easy to smother a small fire that some people might not want to "waste" a fire extinguish on.

Selling

Fire blankets are commonly used in kitchens, laboratories, workshops, and other environments where small fires may occur. They are particularly useful for smothering fires involving cooking oils, grease, electrical equipment, or clothing.

You must try to sell this product to every single business that has a fire risk. My main focus has always been on kitchens. But I've had buyers that bought for barns which you don't exactly think of.

I would stick to a pricing of R130 to R150 (R47.73 - R67.73 profit per blanket) maybe with a 2 for R250 (R85.46) even though some slightly less or much more. Now if you have a single-person, single-product business, then you are going to have to sell quite a few a day.

Fire blankets are needed in a lot of businesses but it's not widely marketed outside of the internet search advertising. A lot of people don't know where to buy fire blankets close to them and if they must order online they must pay around another R100 extra for shipping. So use that in your sales pitch (that it will cost much more to order online as they still need to pay shipping).

Business Model

This opportunity looks at fire blankets as a single product business but it can also be part of the product mix of:

  • Food service or commercial kitchen supply along with food hygiene packs

  • Niche consumer healthcare

  • Fire Safety
